Estepona Town Hall informs that Room 2 of the Casa de Las Tejerinas will host, from November 21, the glass art exhibition 'Miradas, de latrucción al arte', by the local master glassmaker Jonatan Díaz.
The exhibition is made up of a total of 16 unique, hand-made pieces and can be visited until December 4, Tuesday to Friday, from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., and Saturdays, from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., with free admission.
Jonatan Díaz was born in Estepona. From a very young age he was attracted by the rays of light that passed through the majestic stained glass windows of cathedrals and other buildings, which led him to become interested in glass at a very early age. At just 14 years old he learned to cut glass and to solder lead with a manual soldering iron heated by fire. At 18 he opened his own workshop, Vitromar, where he has continued to work for 27 years.
Today he continues to perfect his technique with careful and constant work studying traditional techniques, new materials and tools, which has led him to have a consolidated position among glass artists in our country and the recognition of the Junta de Andalucía as a Master Craftsman.
As a result of this research, he has developed a line of sculptural kaleidoscopes called Reflektium, for which he has been awarded the prize for Outstanding Work of Craftsmanship.
As everything related to glass and art demands his attention, in recent months he has concentrated on the production of a series of pieces made with hammered safety glass, creating impressive glass portraits with a hammer as his only tool. Despite technological advances, his work is still manual, maintaining great respect for traditional techniques while adding an innovative twist to his designs. Some of his works are spread throughout the country, including the Canary Islands, Ceuta and the Balearic Islands. Outside Spain he has carried out work in France, Holland, Germany, Poland, Russia, Slovenia and the United States, among others.
