International day for the elimination of violence against women 2024

The City Council commemorates the 'International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women'

The official ceremony will take place next Monday with a tribute to the murdered women and the awards ceremony of the XXVI Poster Competition '25 de Noviembre'

Estepona Town Hall informs about the programme of commemorative events for the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, which is celebrated every 25th of November. The official event will take place on the same day, at 12.30 pm in the Plaza Antonia Guerrero. Tribute will be paid to the victims of gender violence. The local authorities call on Estepona society to show its rejection of violence and its solidarity with the victims, observing a minute of silence after the official words.

The commemorative manifesto will then be read out. As every year, the International Day to Eliminate Violence against Women marks the beginning of the UN's Join Up Campaign, 16 days of activism (25 Nov-10 Dec) that conclude on International Human Rights Day.

This year, the 2024 theme is 'Every 10 minutes a woman is murdered. #NoExcuse. JOIN to end violence against women' and aims to mobilise all members of society in the face of an alarming escalation of violence against women, as well as to revitalise commitments and demand accountability and concrete measures from decision-makers.

Finally, the awards ceremony for the 26th Poster Competition '25 November' will take place, a contest on violence against women in all its forms, in which a total of 154 students (122 girls and 32 boys) from secondary education from the five IES in the town have participated. In this edition, 150 works have been presented. The jury has been formed by the councillor assigned to the Women's delegation, Julia Simón; the Drawing and Painting teacher from the municipal Culture delegation, Rocío Garín; María del Mar Pérez Tuda and Julián Salas Prado, sub-inspectors of Citizen Participation and of the UFAM, respectively, of the National Police; and Florencio Benítez López, representing the Comprehensive System of Cases of Gender Violence (Viogén), a programme that helps local police officers to act quickly when these types of crimes are detected.

The winners of the XXVI '25th November Poster Competition' are as follows:

1st prize: Iker Ramos Serrano, 4th B of IES Puerta del Mar.

2nd prize: Claudia Bellido Morales, 4th B of IES Mediterráneo.

3rd prize: Julia Pereira Martín and Mustafá Islam Charkaoui El Meghary. 1ºE of the IES Mediterráneo.

Special mention: Andrea López Moral, 4th B of IES Puerta del Mar.

On the other hand, this month the City Council has started the eleventh edition of the 'Observa' Project in the town's high schools, aimed at 1st year ESO students, with the aim of training young people in equality and preventing gender violence.

The 25N commemoration will be completed with the photographic exhibition 'Photography as a means of expression and overcoming. Gender Violence: prevention and awareness', with snapshots taken by the students of the conceptual photography workshop taught by Gladys Farias, which will remain at the CEIP Ramón García.
