Exhibition of paintings "free verse" by jorge rivas
The artist from Cadiz, Jorge Rivas, exhibits his pictorial work 'Verso Libre' at the Casa de Las Tejerinas
The exhibition can be visited from January 30 to February 12
Estepona Town Hall informs that Room 2 of Casa de Las Tejerinas, located in Plaza de las Flores, will host an exhibition of paintings by the Cadiz artist Jorge Rivas from next Thursday, January 30. The exhibition, entitled 'Verso Libre', is made up of 14 medium and large-format works made using the oil technique on canvas, paper and board.
The style of this self-taught artist, who works meticulously in detail and constantly seeks to define a personal style to express his inner world, is that of figuration with a narrative character, developed in compositions with an expressionist and distorted touch when he represents dreams or imagined moments and more “realistic” in portraits or urban landscapes. His intention is to make the viewer reflect and let his imagination fly.
This exhibition will be open until February 12, Tuesday to Friday, from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.; and Saturdays, from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., with free admission.
Jorge Rivas was born in El Puerto de Santa María in 1964 and currently lives in Alcalá de los Gazules. “As far back as I can remember, I remember drawing at my parents’ house. I was a shy child and I imagine that was my way of expressing myself.”
At the age of 22, he had his first job as a draughtsman at the archaeological museum in his city. A year earlier, he, his brother and two other colleagues formed a graphic design collective. In 1986, they held their first exhibition of surrealist-style drawings made with black pen, and in 1990, their first exhibition of paintings.
In 1991 they were selected for the Cadiz Biennial of Contemporary Art 'Aduana', where they sold their first painting. The president of the jury was Antonio López and he personally chose their work. In 1992 they exhibited at the Carbonería, in Seville, and in 1993, after exhibiting at the Silos gallery in Tarifa and starting a conversation with Guillermo Pérez Villalba and Fe Rodríguez, they went to Madrid with the intention of making a name for themselves.
During the 12 years he stayed in the capital, he held a few more exhibitions and entered the world of work as a designer. After his return to Cádiz in 2005, he held a solo exhibition in El Puerto in 2006, and did not exhibit again until 2023. His last exhibition was at the Vejer de la Frontera Museum in July 2024.
