V international poetry prize "city of estepona"

The City Council announces the 5th International Poetry Prize 'Ciudad de Estepona', endowed with 7,000 euros for the winning work

Original works can be submitted from January 30 to March 17. The last edition reached a record number of participants, exceeding 2,000, making this competition one of the most anticipated at a national level.

Estepona City Council has announced the 5th International Poetry Prize 'Ciudad de Estepona', which is worth 7,000 euros. This is one of the most important literary competitions in the country, which received more than 2,000 entries in its most recent edition last year.

The director of the competition, the writer and poet Alejandro Simón Partal, has presented today this fifth call for entries which, as in the previous ones, includes the publication of the winning work by Pre-Textos, one of the most prestigious and present publishing houses in Spain and Latin America.

Simón Partal has highlighted the City Council's commitment to promoting culture and has stressed that this poetry prize has become established in just a few years as one of the most sought-after by authors who write in Spanish anywhere in the world, as confirmed by the number of works submitted from other countries. In his opinion, "this international impact is motivated by the soul we have put into this prize and everything that revolves around it, since coinciding with the award ceremony, various activities are organised to promote reading and strengthen ties with culture in our city."

The deadline for submitting original works will begin on January 30 and will be open until March 17 at 3:00 p.m. They must be sent in PDF format to the following email address: premiointernacionalpoesia@estepona.es. The rules can be consulted on the municipal website www.estepona.es. The jury's decision will be made public on May 8.

In this edition, the president of the jury will be Luis Alberto de Cuenca, poet, philologist and translator. National Poetry Prize winner and member of the Royal Academy of History, he has been director of the Institute of Philology of the Higher Centre for Scientific Research (CSIC) and of the National Library of Spain, and has held the position of Secretary of State for Culture. He has received numerous awards, both for his literary and journalistic work. He has just published the poetry anthology 'Los dedos de la aurora. Poemas del mundo clásico', where he recreates the ancient world from a contemporary perspective.

Alejandro Simón Partal has stressed that Pre-Textos has achieved one of the best catalogues of poetry, narrative and essay in the Spanish language during its more than four years

decades of experience, so the publication of the winning collection of poems will be especially interesting for its author.

This literary competition was born in 2021 as one of the most important that have been created in recent years on the national scene, both for the economic endowment of the award and for its connection to one of the most important publishers in the Spanish language. In its fourth edition, it reached a record number of participants with a total of 2,041 works submitted, half a thousand more than those registered the previous year. Of these, around 60% correspond to national authors; 30% were works from Latin America; and 10%, from other countries around the world.
