Malaga Philharmonic Orchestra

Malaga Philharmonic Orchestra, Malaga City Council / Andalusian Regional Government

The Málaga Philharmonic Orchestra gave its inaugural concert on February 14, 1991. It was founded as the Málaga City Orchestra, a consortium between the Málaga City Council and the Regional Government of Andalusia, in response to the conviction that a city like Málaga should have a great symphony orchestra.

At the head of the Orchestra and its project, six principal conductors have imprinted their own personality: Octav Calleya, Odón Alonso, Alexander Rahbari, Aldo Ceccato, Edmon Colomer and Manuel Hernández Silva.

Currently, the principal and artistic director is Maestro José María Moreno.

The Málaga Philharmonic Orchestra has believed it essential not to limit its activities to subscription programming and has launched enthusiastic parallel offerings. Along with CD recordings of a diverse range of repertoires featuring various maestros, it also includes two Chamber Music Series, parallel to its subscription symphonic programming: its series "The Philharmonic Facing the Sea," specifically designed for new audiences and young people with a special artistic vision; and the Andalusian Youth Baroque Orchestra (JOBA), founded in 2010 as an educational project.

The Málaga City Council awarded him the "Málaga Prize" for the best musical work of 2001, and the M Capital Company awarded him its Culture Prize, among other distinctions from various cultural organizations at the provincial and national levels.

The SGAE awarded the Orchestra a special prize in 2007, in recognition of its work in support of contemporary Spanish music.

The OFM has received awards from the Málaga Athenaeum, the Zegrí Cultural Association, the Málaga Writers Association "Friends of Málaga," and the Friends of the OFM Association in recognition of its 25th anniversary. In 2017, the Málaga Provincial Council awarded the OFM the Provincial Distinction of Honor for its cultural and social development.

He is a Resident Orchestra of the International Piano Competition “Premio Jaén” and the Andrés Segovia International Classical Guitar Competition in La Herradura, Almuñécar, Granada.

The Andalusian Regional Government awarded him the 2021 Andalusian Flag of the Arts.
