Grunsber naturalist group environmental lecture series

The Grunsber Naturalist Group and the City Council are organizing a series of informative lectures about Sierra Bermeja.

The lecture series will begin on November 21 and end on December 18, and will cover various disciplines, such as entomology, geology, ornithology and botany, in addition to a presentation dedicated to the depletion of natural resources.

On Saturday, November 29th, there will be a guided hiking route through Sierra Bermeja, prior registration required at info@grunsber.org

The Estepona City Council informs that on Friday the 21st, a series of five lectures and a geological interpretation route will begin at the Casa de Las Tejerinas, with the aim of disseminating information about Sierra Bermeja and environmental issues, organized by the Sierra Bermeja Naturalist Group, Grunsber, with the sponsorship of the Estepona City Council.

The lectures will cover various disciplines, such as entomology, geology, ornithology and botany, in addition to a presentation dedicated to the depletion of natural resources derived from the consumption model of the capitalist system, and will be held in the Alfonso Gil room of the Casa de las Tejerinas, with the exception of the lecture 'Degrowth and collapse', which will take place in the auditorium of Aprona, Foundation in favor of People with Functional Diversity of Estepona.

Sierra Bermeja is the best example of serpentine ecosystems (vegetation growing on peridotite) in Spain. The uniqueness of this natural area lies, among other aspects, in the fact that it is home to the only Spanish fir forest in the world growing on peridotite, rocks originating from the Earth's upper mantle located at depths of between 70 and 150 kilometers. Furthermore, its soils, rich in heavy metals, have fostered the emergence of valuable endemic flora and fauna, adapted to these extreme conditions.

The program will be as follows:

Friday the 21st, at 6:00 PM: Entomology of Sierra Bermeja. José Manuel Moreno Benítez, a researcher and science communicator from Malaga specializing in entomology and president of the Andalusian Entomological Society (SAE), will give the lecture 'Introduction to the insects of Sierra Bermeja'.

Friday the 28th, at 5:30 p.m.: Geology of Sierra Bermeja. Dr. José Manuel García Aguilar, a collaborating professor in the Department of Ecology and Geology at the University of Málaga, will give the lecture 'Sierra Bermeja: a gateway to the deep interior of our planet'.

In addition to the conference, a geological interpretation tour led by García Aguilar will take place on Saturday, November 29th. Registration is required and can be done by emailing info@grunsber.org.

Thursday 4th, at 6:00 PM: Ornithology in Sierra Bermeja. The young naturalist from Casar de Cáceres, Andrés Rojas Sánchez, member of Grunsber and the Strait Ornithological Group (GOES), and recently appointed expert ringer at the SEO BirdLife Bird Migration Center, will give the lecture 'The Birds of Sierra Bermeja'.

Thursday 11th, at 7:00 pm: Degrowth and collapse. The writer and editor Carlos Taibo Arias, tenured professor of Political Science and Administration at the Autonomous University of Madrid until his retirement, will give the lecture 'Degrowth and collapse'.

Thursday 18th, at 6:00 pm: Botany of Sierra Bermeja. Professor of Botany at the University of Malaga, Noelia Hidalgo Triana, one of the authors of the book Sierra Bermeja. Biodiversity and conservation values of serpentine ecosystems (La Serranía, 2024), will give the lecture 'The plant communities of Sierra Bermeja'.
